Ski inside the Arctic Circle and enjoy husky safaris, snowmobiling, and hunting for the northern lights. It’s more than skiing; it’s a magical experience. Lapland ski trip? Really?

You’ll need to start this adventure in Kittilä or Rovaniemi and take the shuttle bus from the airport to Sirkka. We stayed at Levi Suites Levin Klubi, and the experience was brilliant. The location was very good because it was away from the Levi hotspot (ZERO POINT), but You can get around with a bus or hop on Your skis and get up to the slopes exactly from there.

If you’re planning on going on a Northern Lights hunt, then the best time to go is from October to November and from February to March. At this time, temperatures are not extreme, there is enough darkness, and the sky at night is clearer than in December and January.

The cheapest time to go and enjoy winter in Levi is autumn (October and November), the snow is already on the mountain, and some skiing tracks are already open. After that, the winter peak season starts and continues till the spring, and the prices are higher. Of course, January and February are the coldest times of the year in the Arctic Circle.

    Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding

Levi Mountain is full of downhill skiing and snowboarding slopes of different difficulty levels. Tracks are spread all around the mountain.

The best area for nonprofessionals is the South slopes – full of different slopes of different lengths and open all year round because of the artificial lighting. South slopes feature blue slopes of different lengths. South Park is for more advanced snowboarders and skiers with a lot of different jumps. South Slopes also gives You a little adventure through the trees if You want to. In the South Slopes, You can have a lot of fun. Other areas are for more advanced skiers and snowboarders.

The prices for equipment rentals are similar all around. Prices are the same as for a Cross-country ski set, but You’ll need to buy a ski pass to enjoy the adventure of downhill slopes.

    E-Biking with a fat bike

E-biking in winter through the snowy forest is a thing I didn’t think I’d do, but all in all, it was a great experience, which You couldn’t think of while on a skiing getaway, but it’s a must-do, especially in this beautiful environment.

Rent an E-fat bike and head to the trails even in winter. A great tip is to understand how an e-bike works before heading on the snowy and hilly trails. Once You understand the whole thing, it’s such an adventure. The trails are in very good condition for biking and hiking, and are driven through with a snowmobile. Try not to fall into the snowdrifts on the sides of the trails; getting out of them may be both fun and difficult.

    E-Fatbike rental for 3 hours is around 50 EUR + 20 if You want a helmet. E-Fatbike rental for a full day, 10:00-17:00, is around 70 EUR + 20 for a helmet.

    Explore winterwalking and Fatbike routes…

    Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is an experience You have to try when enjoying winter in Finland. It can be very fun, but at the same time, You have to be in good shape because trails are not easy to complete because of the elevation during Your hike and snow, but the views are stunning, and it’s easier to walk in snowshoes on the snow. In your own boots, it can be very hard because of the thickness of the snow and the slipperiness throughout the trails.

Of course, there are easy trails too, but the difficult ones are more beautiful.

Snowshoe rental for 3 hours is around 14 EUR + 4 for the poles. Snowshoe rental for a full day is around 18 EUR + 6 for the poles. Take the poles too!!!

    Itinerary Suggestion For 7 Days

    Day 1: Arrive
    Day 2: Cross-country skiing
    Day 3: Downhill skiing/snowboarding
    Day 5: E-Fatbiking
    Day 6: Snowshoeing
Day 7: Rest, relax, travel home

    Day 1

Summary: On the first day, arrive at Sirkka, check in at Your hotel, go grocery shopping, explore the surroundings, and settle down.

    Day 2

    Cross-Country skiing

For the next day, it’s a great time to do the hardest part of the adventure in Levi. You can rent Your cross-country skiing set and explore the cross-country skiing tracks around Levi Mountain and the beautiful white views all around while sliding on the tracks in excellent condition.

If You’re an early bird, then the tracks may not be ready for the day. If it was snowing the previous day and night, then it would also be a great adventure to find the right tracks. Cross-country skiing tracks in Levi are hilly, so choose the right track for Your abilities.

    Days 3 and 4

    Downhill skiing/snowboarding

The next 2 days are for downhill slopes. Skiing and snowboarding slopes are really good in Levi; most of the slopes are equipped with artificial lights because of the darkness in winter. It may be just 2 hours or less with the daylight, but any time on the slopes is an adventure in itself.

Imagine getting up the mountain in the darkness, but up at the top, You’ll see the sunrise or sunset; these views over the snowy landscape are mesmerising. From the top station, You can get literally to any slope on the mountain. Also, next to the slopes are little forested areas where You can ski or snowboard through, and that’s another amazing adventure if You’re brave enough.

From any side down the mountain, You can catch a ski bus and get to another place or Your hotel.

If You have more than a week there, I recommend downhill slopes for 3 to 4 days, so You can explore more slopes.

    Day 5

    E-Fatbiking

On day 5, rent an E-fatbike and explore the trails around Levi Mountain. These trails are for bikes, hiking, and snowshoeing. You will find many adventure seekers on the trails.

These trails are driven over with a snowmobile almost every day and marked with ribbons. But trails are not really wide, so You can easily fall into snowdrifts on the sides, and it’s not very easy to get out of them, but it’s fun if You have proper clothing.

On Your way, You may find some lean-to shelters too. Feel free to use them and light a fire for a little while.

Before starting your adventure, understand how e-bikes work, so You can easily bike through the hilly trails. While on the trail, You’ll see some amazing views and maybe some animals too, so look around.

    Day 6

    Snowshoeing

On day 6, rent snowshoes and explore some other trails around Levi. I recommend snowshoeing up some of the mountains nearby. THE TRAIL will be marked for snowshoes.

This trail is fun for snowshoeing because of the views around You. It’s steep and slippery at some points, so You will not be able to complete it without snowshoes. Take a good flashlight with You, because your phone will die from the cold if You use it, and rent snowshoes together with poles, which will be very useful, especially to get down.

On Your way and nearby, You may find some lean-to shelters too. Feel free to use them and light a fire for a little while.

    Day 7

Summary: This day is for relaxing, resting, looking back at Your adventures here, and getting back home.

    Highlights

    Day 1

Summary: A day in Istanbul unfolded like a vibrant story. From the lively streets to the majestic Blue Mosque and Sultanahmet Square. A neighborhood of colorful homes, a testament to the beauty of everyday life. Today rekindles the joy of exploration and the artistry of the world around us.

    Sights and activities:

The Blue Mosque and Sultanahmet Square

In the heart of Sultanahmet Square sits the jewel of Istanbul – The Blue Mosque. It has stood there since the 17th century when Ahmed I ruled Ottoman Empire.

Six minarets surround the mosque, legend says that Ahmed I wanted minarets to be made of gold (The word for gold in Turkish is altın) but apparently this was misunderstood as altı (which means six).

I think it’s not a big deal, the mosque brings peace and happiness to You anyway, because of the marble that shines around You and the beauty of the inside is just indescribable. All You need to do is just see and feel it on Your own.

Don’t forget to wear appropriate clothes to enter the mosque such as pants or long shorts for a man, pants or long skirts, and of course, clothes that cover hair and arms too for a woman.

    Bosphorus Tour

When You’re finished with The Blue Mosque and wandering through Sultanahmet Square, catch the T1 tram to Eminönü, and take a Bosphorus Tour. It was such a lovely experience.

Can You imagine floating through the world’s narrowest strait used for international navigation, a strait that divides Europe and Asia, and of course under some of the world’s most impressive suspension bridges?

The port is full of ferries that are going on a Bosphorus Tour. Choose the ferry that’s not already full so You can get a place to sit.

From my experience, it’s better to sit on the left side of the ferry because it’s the side that goes closer to the coast and places the guide is talking about.

When You’re brought back from the Bosphorus, cross the Galata Bridge and go to the Karaköy Ferry terminal take a Ferry (Üsküdar), and get to the Fener ferry terminal.

    Balat

Once You leave the Fener Ferry terminal, start with – going towards the Coloured Houses of Balat (Balat Renkli Evler), and enjoy the vibe on Your way. Once a Jewish neighborhood now an authentic and vibrant neighborhood to wander around and escape the tourist crowds enjoying the charming little streets and traditional Turkish homes.

Of course, you’ll feel a sense of warmth and community that is hard to find in many other parts of the city. The people of Balat are proud of their neighborhood and love sharing its beauty and history with visitors.

While wandering around you’ll come across charming cafes, boutique shops, and traditional Turkish houses painted in every color of the rainbow. When You feel You’ve wandered enough go toward the Balat ferry terminal and catch a ferry (Üsküdar) back to the Karaköy Ferry terminal.
In this way, from Fener ferry terminal to Balat ferry terminal You will have walked through the lovely Balat.

    Day 2

Summary: Experience Istanbul’s captivating essence in a single day: immerse in Hagia Sophia’s historical fusion, explore the Harem’s allure at Topkapi Palace, and watch the city transform from Galata Tower at sunset, where past and present converge in a mesmerizing tapestry of moments.

    Sights and activities:

    Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia proudly stands next to Sultan Ahmet Park decorating the views of Istanbul’s busiest area. The place feels very different from The Blue Mosque, I guess that’s why they built it there 3 times at the same spot. Once You walk in it feels like leisurely peace has come over Your life.

You can still find the things that still remind you that it’s been a Christian cathedral, they haven’t removed anything from the times when it was a basilica, just added things to make it usable for Muslims. It’s easy to spend here a lot of time, starting from the outdoor area of Hagia Sophia and ending with a peaceful time inside while sitting and enjoying the peace and a few tourists all around you.

Hagia Sophia means Holy Wisdom, it was the largest cathedral in all of Christendom. Originally built as a Christian basilica, then became a Mosque. This beautiful architectural piece awaits people from all religions. It’s the oldest and fastest-finished Cathedral of all time.

The little line to get in is worth it, but don’t stand in the line if it’s all through the square, just go somewhere else and come back later. If You’re not ready to stand there and wait, it’s better to visit in the afternoon or on weekdays, but if You want to be the first to enter You have to go in the morning around 8 – 8.30 am, You’ll need to wait in line till the opening time at around 9 am, they usually open it for visitors at 9 am, sometimes 10 am, but sometimes earlier, no one knows…

    Topkapi Palace

A lot of walking and history awaits You at Topkapi Palace, tickets are a little pricey, but if You go there and enjoy history, it’s worth a visit. Use Your audio guide that’s included in the tickets – You will understand more about everything that happened there and how was life there.

For me the most interesting part was Hareem. A world of lavishly decorated marble hallways, arched doorways, and over 400 rooms. As You walk through Hareem immerse in the times when there was a bustle of life. Harem functioned as the private apartments of the Sultan and it was home to over a thousand harem women, children, and black eunuchs.

When You get through Hareem continue to the Topkapi Palace museums in the courtyard of the Topkapi Palace. The Topkapi Palace Museum boasts a spectacular and fascinating collection of Ottoman robes, porcelain, miniatures, calligraphic manuscripts, jewelry, and other treasures, including the Topkapi Dagger.

The museum offers a glimpse into the luxurious lives of the Ottoman sultans and their glorious past. Run through them, there is some interesting stuff to see and know about.

When You exit the small gate go to the museums by the Tower of Justice, You’ll find a lot of interesting weapons and things that were gifted to the Sultans of Topkapi Palace. Finish off with Topkapi Palace Kitchens.

    Galata Tower

A peak that stands above the roofs of Istanbul, once a watchtower now a place to enjoy the 360 views of Istanbul, especially at sunset or sunrise hours, featuring the Golden Horn and Bosphorus on Your live pictures of Istanbul. Galata Tower is a symbol of Beyoğlu and Istanbul.

The Galata Tower is undoubtedly one of the most iconic monuments on the peninsula that offers the most stellar visuals of the entire city all around You.

An interesting fact: The tower was also used as a prison during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Süleiman the Magnificent.

    Day 3

Summary: Now it’s time to haggle at one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, and of course, the most spectacular too, then grab some traditional sweets, spices, and teas at the beautiful Egyptian Bazaar.

    Sights and activities:

    Grand Bazaar

Wander through the countless and beautiful alleys of Grand Bazaar and discover a whole new experience of walking through markets and haggling with merchants. Whether you’re a seasoned haggler or new to the practice, exploring the Grand Bazaar and engaging in the age-old tradition of negotiation is an adventure in itself, offering a glimpse into the vibrant heart of Turkish commerce and culture.

The Grand Bazaar is truly a labyrinth of treasures. From colorful ceramics and intricate carpets to dazzling jewelry and aromatic spices, the bazaar offers a dazzling array of goods.

Haggling: Haggling is an integral part of the shopping experience at the Grand Bazaar. Negotiating prices is not only expected but also a cultural tradition. Sellers often start with higher prices, expecting customers to engage in friendly back-and-forth bargaining.
    How to haggle?

    • Turkish shopkeepers are skilled in the art of persuasion. They may offer you tea or engage in conversation to create a friendly atmosphere before starting the haggling process. It’s all part of the unique shopping ritual.
    • When haggling, the key is to find the “real price” that both you and the seller can agree upon. It’s a dance where both parties aim to strike a balance between the value of the item and what you’re willing to pay.
    • Polite persistence can go a long way. If a price doesn’t seem right, don’t be afraid to walk away. Often, the shopkeeper will call you back with a better offer.
    • Do your research and have a general idea of the value of the item you’re interested in. This knowledge will empower you during the haggling process and help you make informed decisions.
    • Haggling at the Grand Bazaar is not just about getting a good deal; it’s also about enjoying the experience. Many visitors find the bargaining process to be a fun and memorable part of their trip.
    • Haggling provides an opportunity for cultural exchange. Engaging in friendly negotiations with local sellers allows you to connect on a personal level and gain insights into Turkish customs and traditions.
    • While haggling is expected, it’s important to maintain a respectful and friendly demeanor. Building a positive rapport with the seller can enhance the overall shopping experience.
    Egyptian Bazaar

Wandering through the Egyptian Bazaar is a sensory and cultural adventure that allows you to immerse yourself in the vibrant tapestry of Istanbul’s past and present, all while discovering the flavors and traditions that make Turkish cuisine and culture so unique.

As you explore the bazaar, your senses will be treated to a feast of colors, aromas, and textures. The air is filled with the fragrant scents of various spices and herbs, creating an enchanting atmosphere.

While the Egyptian Bazaar is famous for its spices, it offers a diverse array of goods beyond just culinary delights. You’ll find everything from herbs and exotic spices to teas, dried fruits, nuts, sweets, and even handmade soaps.

The Egyptian Bazaar’s architecture features a unique blend of Ottoman and Egyptian design elements. Its stunning domes and intricate tilework are reminiscent of the grandeur of the era.
The bazaar’s name, “Egyptian,” comes from the fact that it was initially built to generate income for the upkeep of the nearby New Mosque. The revenue from the trade was meant to come from Egypt, hence the name.

Over the centuries, the Egyptian Bazaar has played a significant role in Istanbul’s trade and economy. It was a crucial hub for the exchange of goods along the Silk Road and other trading routes.

After exploring markets, make Your way to Ankara

    Day 4

Summary: In Ankara, the day unfolds with reverence at Antikabir, honoring Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Later, Ankara Castle crowns your journey, offering panoramic views. At sunset, the castle transforms into a mesmerizing backdrop, casting a spellbinding charm over the cityscape.

    Sights and activities:

    Antikabir

Step into the vibrant heart of Turkey’s capital and unlock the tapestry of modern democracy at the incredible Antikabir. Here, Anıtkabir stands as the majestic mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the visionary who ignited the Turkish War of Independence and birthed the Republic of Turkey.

Your journey within is guided by the Honor Guard, leading you to the hallowed resting place of the architect of modern Turkey, where history intertwines with remarkable architecture and panoramic city views.

Venture through the Ataturk & Independence War Museum, where the narrative of Turkey’s liberation unfolds before your eyes. Immerse yourself in stellar exhibits detailing Turkey’s relentless struggle for independence, its clashes with Greece, and the indomitable life of Ataturk himself.

The pages of history come alive in this captivating space, ensuring an unforgettable encounter with the past that shaped a nation’s destiny.

    Ankara Castle

Embarking on a deeper exploration of Ankara unfurls a poetic rendezvous with the setting sun at Ankara Castle (Turkish: Ankara Kalesi) – an ancient citadel whose storied walls whisper secrets from the 8th century.

Follow the cobblestone pathways that wind through quaint streets, where charming old houses adorned in pristine white have rekindled their splendor through recent restoration efforts.

As you ascend, a breathtaking panorama of Ankara awaits, a painter’s palette of hues glistening as day gracefully transforms into twilight. While the castle’s highest point remains an enigma, the designated viewpoint unveils a mesmerizing spectacle, where the city’s contours are brushed with the ethereal glow of sunset.

As you wander through the castle’s labyrinthine lanes, serendipity awaits at every corner – from delightful souvenir shops and neighborhood groceries to enchanting cafes nestled in corners of history.

Amidst the evocative aura, you’ll chance upon charming eateries inviting you to linger over dinner and savor the flavors of Ankara’s essence. Amidst these age-old stones, an intriguing facet emerges: Ankara Castle is not just a relic of yesteryears, but a living tapestry where everyday lives continue to interweave with the rhythms of history.

The white shores are not made of sand but of miniature soft magnesium stones. At many points in the water, they are also mixed with grey clay, so when you step on the bottom, your feet can sink 10 to 20 cm in some places. But this clay is good for your skin and it is said that it can contribute to the healing of some skin diseases.

So, get ready to ditch the crowds and unlock your very own slice of Pamukkale perfection.

Sure, this spot might be on the tourist radar, but it’s like stepping into a time capsule of flavors and family traditions. We’re talking five generations of kebab-crafting mastery packed into one place. These are the folks who’ve been perfecting Iskender kebabs since day one, right here in the heart of Bursa. This is where the magic began, and trust me, this is where you’ll savor the most mouthwatering rendition.
